Con Edison is currently working in front of the garden updating the power grid. During the upgrade process, Con Ed uncovered a sewage problem that must also be repaired. The work is schedule to be completed on 4/26/2013. After the completion of this work, Parks will resume the garden rebuild process.
Two weeks ago Parks delivered soil to level out the pitch of the garden. After Con Ed has finished their work, Parks will return to install the fence that separates the garden space from the plot directly to the east, from which the building collapsed onto the garden. They will also install the stone paths.
Upon Park’s completion of this work, Green Thumb will schedule the delivery of the replacement plants and trees. This will likely occur on a Friday so that we may assemble our gardeners and volunteers to plant these items on Saturday and Sunday. As soon as we have a delivery date, we will reach out to the community and coordinate with Green Thumb so we can get everything into the ground as quickly as possible.
The rebuild will follow the original garden plans from Edaw with a slight modification to include more vegetable boxes and to allow room for work on the adjacent plot to be completed without causing more damage to the plants in our garden.
As part of the insurance settlement, we’ll be receiving some of the items that we lost during the collapse such as the composter, grape arbor, and vegetable box framing. We have applied for a grant to supplement the insurance settlement and will be applying all money awarded towards the purchase of a new shed, water barrels, hoses and other assorted items.
